Late Spring/Early Summer 2010
- Professor Vickie Williams presented her work-in-progress “The Conscience of For-Profit Health Care” at the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics’ 33rd Annual Health Law Professor’s Conference in Austin, Texas in June.
- Professor Gail Hammer and Professor Larry Weiser recently spent two weeks in Sao Paulo, Brazil, training faculty in clinical teaching methods at the Direito GV Law School.
- At the Spring meeting of the ABA Business Law Section, Professor Stephen Sepinuck was part of a panel that gave a 90-minute presentation on the upcoming revisions to Article 9 of the UCC.
- Professor Sepinuck also recently completed editing the Secured Transactions component of the Annual Survey of Commercial Law, to be published in the August edition of The Business Lawyer. He also completed another article for Barkley Clark’s Secured Transactions Monthly entitled “Debtor’s Negotiation of Foreclosure Sale Might Ease Secure Creditor Burden in Complying with Article 9.” In June, Professor Sepinuck gave a one-hour CLE presentation entitled Article 9 Update at the Eastern District Bankruptcy Conference.
- In April, Interim Dean George Critchlow presented on the topic of “Legal Strategies for Fighting Hate in Washington State” to the Annual Senior Lawyers Conference in Seattle sponsored by the WSBA Senior Lawyers Section. Interim Dean Critchlow also presented in May on “Attorneys’ Criticism of Judges: Professional Misconduct or Protected Speech?” at the Federal Civil Trial Practice Seminar in Richland, Wash., sponsored by the Benton-Franklin County Bar Association.
- Professor Chris Lynch, a new member of the faculty this Fall, was invited to speak to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington in June. The presentation, titled "Protect Your Valuable Work - Patent, Trademark, Copyright and Trade Secrets," was part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Seminar Series on "The Future of Computing." In June, at the invitation of the European Patent Office, Professor Lynch also toured the EPO campus in The Hague, Netherlands, and met with EPO officials to learn more about EPO procedures.
Professor Upendra Acharya presented his paper “Defining Terrorism and Lingering Int’l Politics: Int’l Law as a Quiet Observer” in June at the Athens, Greece, International Conference on Politics and International Affairs.- In June, Professor Jennifer Gellner took two clinical students to Anchorage to represent low-income taxpayer clients on the calendar of the Alaska Federal Tax Court.
- Professor Ann Murphy published an article for the LexisNexis “Tax Law Community” website entitled “FRE 502: The Lawyer-Saving Provision for Inadvertent Waivers of Privileges.” The same website also published Professor Murphy’s write-up of a Tax Court case in which the taxpayers claimed the “Geithner Defense” against the application of tax penalties. That defense, rejected by the court, basically blamed failure to pay taxes on TurboTax software.
- Professor Brooks Holland’s "Commentary: How the Court Retooled Miranda" was published in the July 14, 2010, issue of the National Law Journal. Professor Holland also participated by webcam in the Annual Junior CrimProf Conference in Chicago in which he served as a discussant in connection with a paper titled "Retribution and the Experience of Punishment," by Bronsteen (Loyola Chicago), Christopher Buccafusco (Chicago-Kent), and Jonathan Masur (Univ. of Chicago).
Professor Linda Rusch attended the 2010 American Law Institute Annual Meeting in Washington DC in order to participate in the discussion of amendments to UCC Article 9 and the final approval of the Restatement of Restitution. She has been reappointed as an American Law Institute representative to the Permanent Editorial Board for the Uniform Commercial Code and will continue to serve as a member of the Executive Committee. She recently finished two new volumes for the Hawkland Uniform Commercial Code Series, a treatise on the UCC and other commercial law. Publication will be in the fall of 2010. Professor Rusch also was the Editor in Chief of the The Business Lawyer issue published in May.- In June, Professor Jay Kanassatega and Professor Linda Rusch hosted the inaugural session of the Alaska Demonstration Project for the Institute for the Development of Economic Policy for Indigenous People in Anchorage. Representatives of several Alaskan Native Corporations and affiliated traditional governments attended and participated in discussions concerning how the Institute can contribute as a public policy think tank to self-government of Native peoples.
- Professor Megan Ballard presented on Gonzaga's Center for Law in Public Service as a panelist for the session on "The Ivory Tower and the Legal Community: A New Paradigm for Access" at the Washington State Bar Association's Access to Justice conference in Wenatchee in June. Professor Ballard, who will be on sabbatical for the 2010/2011 academic year, has received a Fulbright Fellowship to teach this Fall in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia at the Tbilisi State University. She will be teaching a course on Introduction to the American Legal System and researching post-conflict property restitution issues.
- In July, Professor Terry Sawyer organized and moderated the Buskers Symposium/CLE: An Examination of 1st Amendment Rights of Street Performers held at Gonzaga Law School. Professor Brooks Holland presented at the CLE on the topic of “Ethics and Street Performers: Pushing the Envelope for a Good Cause.”
