McCleary: An Update on Washington’s School Funding Litigation

Co-sponsored by Gonzaga University Schools of Education and Law Washington’s constitution says that education is the state’s “paramount duty,” and so the state rather than local school districts must fund all basic educational expenses. In the 2012 McCleary case, the Washington Supreme Court ruled that the legislature was not fulfilling this duty. In 2014, the Court held the Washington State Legislature in contempt of court for not funding education as had been ordered, and imposed a $100,000 per day fine…
