Law Commencement

The 2013 School of Law Commencement will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. in the McCarthey Athletic Center. Students line up in the gymnasium of The Martin Centre in academic attire no later than 8:45 a.m. and we will begin the academic procession into the McCarthey at 9:15 a.m. Guests may take their seats in the McCarthey any time after 8:00 a.m. There are no tickets required and students may invite as many guests as they wish. Prior to lining up that morning in The Martin Centre, graduating law students need to meet on the front steps of the School of Law by 8:00 a.m. in their academic attire for a group picture.

Judy Clarke, who has gained a national reputation for defending those whom society shuns, will address the Law School graduates in the school’s centennial year. She and retired GU law professor John Morey Maurice will receive honorary doctor of laws degrees.

On Friday, May 10, all of our graduating law students and their guests are invited to attend the Law Commencement Mass where we will ask for God’s blessing on our graduates. This Mass is for everyone of every faith tradition. You do not have to be Catholic to attend this Mass – it is for our entire Gonzaga family. The Mass will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the University Chapel on the third floor of College Hall. Parking is available in the lot in front of College Hall and permits are not required

Scott Turow Lecture

Scott Turow Lecture to Kickoff Gonzaga Law Centennial Celebration

Will Discuss Popular Culture Image of Lawyers

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga University School of Law will kickoff the yearlong celebration of its Centennial with a lecture by acclaimed author Scott Turow at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 20 in Gonzaga’s Martin Centre. A book-signing event and reception will follow the lecture. The events are free and open to the public.

Turow’s lecture – titled “Where Are You Perry Mason?” – will explore the popular image of lawyers, the power of attorneys in U.S. society, their perceived dark sides and their ideals as reflected in contemporary culture and media. The reception also will include sales of the newly released Law Centennial Book titled, “Celebrating Gonzaga School of Law: The First 100 years,” written by local journalist and film critic Dan Webster.

Considered by some to be the father of the modern legal thriller. Turow has penned nine best-seller fiction titles, including “Presumed Innocent,” “The Burden of Proof,” and “Reversible Errors.” He has been featured on the cover of Time magazine and serves as the president of the Authors Guild, which Turow calls “the authoritative voice of American writers.”

Turow has been a partner in the Chicago office of SNR Denton, an international law firm, since 1986, concentrating on white-collar criminal defense, while devoting a substantial part of his time to pro bono work, (voluntary and without pay or at a reduced fee as a public service). He has served on a number of public bodies, including the Illinois Commission on Capital Punishment, which recommends reforms to Illinois’ death penalty law. Turow also served as the first chair of the Illinois Executive Ethics Commission, created in 2004 to regulate executive branch employees in Illinois state government.

The Gonzaga Law School’s Centennial celebration runs through the 2012-2013 school year. On Oct. 3, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments at Gonzaga Law School. Other Law School Centennial events include a Seattle-area celebration, the collaborative “Pursuit of Justice” conference in April (2013), and an All-Class Reunion and Centennial Gala (April 2013).

The 2012-13 academic year also marks the 125th Anniversary Celebration for Gonzaga University. Visit www.Gonzaga.edu/125 for an overview of all Gonzaga Law Centennial and Gonzaga 125th Anniversary events, historical timeline, stories, videos, downloads and more.
