For Gonzaga University School of Law professors Upendra Acharya and Brooks Holland, the beginning of summer came with a flurry of grading — and some good news.
“I am happy that both Upendra Acharya and Brooks Holland have been promoted to Associate Professor and will receive tenure,” said Jane Korn, Dean of the Law School. “They both bring valuable insight, impressive academic work, and a great rapport with students to Gonzaga Law.”
Acharya working in international law
Professor Acharya is currently working on two major projects. First, human rights issues that involves the use of human rights movement as a regime change tool. Second, contemporary international law and international politics in the context of U.S. foreign policy. He just got back from China, France and Spain where he served as an invited visiting professor in Beijing, China and Toulouse, France. He also delivered guest lectures at the East University of Political Science and Law in Shanghai and at FRIDE, an EU Think Tank Organization in Madrid, Spain. He will continue working on his research projects this summer.
Bringing experience to Gonzaga Law
“Upendra brings a wealth of knowledge about international law, very important in this increasingly global economy, while Brooks brings needed experience in criminal law and practical experience as a public defender.” said Dean Korn.
Holland working in criminal law
Holland currently is researching and writing in the area of professional responsibility, a subject he loves to teach. This summer, Holland will complete an article titled Kick-Ass Lawyering, which examines the role of lawyers through the lens of pop culture conceptions of diligence and virtue. Holland also has contracted with West Academic Publishing to co-author a professional responsibility textbook. In addition to teaching and writing on academic subjects, Holland is handling a federal appeal before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, has been nominated to the Criminal Law Committee of the New York City Bar Association, and continues to serve on both the Washington State Bar Association Council on Public Defense and the Board of Directors for the ACLU-WA.
Gonzaga University School of Law will soon be beginning its 100th anniversary celebration. Two new professors will also be joining the staff of Gonzaga Law in the 2012-2013 academic year.
