- The Washington State Bar News has accepted an article by Professor Buck Sterling for publication in its June edition. The article is titled “Diploma Privilege” and details the history of allowing graduates of Washington law schools to be admitted to the bar without having to sit for the bar exam.
- Professor Ballard received a Fulbright award to teach and conduct research in the Republic of Georgia during her sabbatical next year. She also received a grant from the Gonzaga University Research Council for research in Colombia.
- In April, Acting Dean Critchlow presented at a CLE sponsored by the Senior Lawyers Section of the Washington State Bar Association in Seattle. The title of the presentation was “Strategies for Fighting Hate Crimes in Washington State.”
- Professor Rusch attended the April ABA Business Law Section Spring Meeting and spoke on Payments Law Reform efforts and the work of the Article 9 Review Committee. She also chaired a meeting of the Editorial Board of the Business Lawyer, of which she is Editor in Chief. Professor Rusch recently presided over her last meeting and related events as President of the Board of Regents for the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers. She also attended the 2010 Payments conference in Seattle hosted by NACHA, in furtherance of her work as the Reporter for the Payments Study Committee of the Uniform Law Conference. Finally, Professor Rusch attended a meeting of the ABA Task Force on Publishing in Chicago, to discuss the future of the ABA’s publishing efforts.
- Professor Gerry Hess, along with co-authors Michael Schwartz and Sophie Sparrow, submitted the manuscript for a new book, “Teaching Law by Design for Adjuncts,” to Carolina Academic Press. Also, Professor Hess’s article, “Developing a Skills and Professionalism Curriculum,” co-authored with Dean Earl Martin, appeared in the Leadership in Legal Education symposium of the University of Toledo Law Review. Professor Hess presented plenary sessions on “Course and Class Planning” and on “Continued Development as a Teacher” at the Institute for Law Teaching and Learning conference at Elon University School of Law. He also edited the Spring 2010 edition of The Law Teacher.
- Professor Murphy and Professor Treuthart recently showed the film “An Inconvenient Tax,” a new documentary about the U.S. tax system. Academics from main campus were invited as well as students and the community at large. Professor Treuthart provided critical commentary and Professor Murphy provided tax background.
- Professor Sepinuck recently attended the spring meeting of the ABA Business Law Section and participated in a panel that gave a 90-minute presentation on the upcoming revisions to Article 9 of the UCC. Professor Sepinuck and Professor Rusch have completed the latest updates to their Bankruptcy course book and teacher’s manual and to their Secured Transactions teacher’s manual. Professor Sepinuck also completed his newest Spotlight column in the joint newsletter of the UCC and Commercial Finance Committees of the ABA and submitted his latest article for Clark’s Secured Transactions monthly.
