On December 4, 2007, Governor Christine Gregoire (GU Law ’77) announced the appointment of Appeals Court Judge Debra L. Stephens to the Washington State Supreme Court.
Judge Stephens is a 1993 graduate of Gonzaga University School of Law.
In appointing Judge Stephens, Governor Gregoire’s statement read, “Appointments to the Supreme Court are one of the most important responsibilities I have as a governor. The decisions that come out of our high court can have profound effects on the lives and families of all of us in this state. Judge Stephens is a legal scholar who understands the importance of making the law relevant and meaningful to real people with real problems. Her legal skills, experience, temperament, integrity, and commitment are qualities that I believe will make her an excellent justice.”
Last April, Judge Stephens was appointed by Governor Gregoire to the Division III Court of Appeals. Prior to that appointment, she practiced law in Spokane as an appellate attorney. Judge Stephens has also been an adjunct professor at the law school since 1997.
Judge Stephens will take office on January 7, 2008, at the Temple of Justice in Olympia, Washington. She will join two other GU law alums on the state’s highest court – Justice Barbara Madsen (’77) and Justice Mary Fairhurst (’84).
