Passport & Student Visa Travel Documents

spacer

florence photo 1You must have a valid passport for travel to Italy. If you don't have one, apply now.

We advise that you also obtain a student visa. In the past, many students have entered Italy as declared “tourists.” While this has generally worked, Italian officials now are stopping students in increasing numbers, asking for appropriate documentation.

If you choose to obtain the student visa and your residency lies within the territory of the San Francisco Consulate, we can help by submitting a group application to the Italian Consulate in San Francisco.

The San Francisco Consulate territory includes:

  • California, excepting these counties:
    • San Louis Obispo
    • Kern
    • San Bernardino
    • Santa Barbara
    • Ventura
    • Los Angeles
    • Riverside
    • San Diego
    • Imperial Valley
    • Orange
  • Hawaii
  • Utah
  • Oregon
  • Washington
  • Idaho
  • Montana
  • Alaska

For Gonzaga students within the San Francisco Consulate Territory to have your visa in time for travel to Florence in May, you must complete the visa application and send all of your documentation, including having your passport and two (2) passport-sized photos, to coordinate the application process through Donna Ryan in the Study Abroad Office (x 3598) on main campus by March 2, 2010.

For Students from Outside the San Francisco Consulate's Territory, including Canada

If your place of residency lies outside the purview of the San Francisco Consulate, it is your responsibility to secure the proper documentation.

  • U.S. citizens
    • If you are a GU student and your driver’s license is from a state outside of the above-referenced territory, you will need to obtain a state I.D. from Washington state's Department of Licensing. The cost is about $10.00.
    • For a complete explanation of the visa requirements in your area, you must contact the Italian Consulate responsible for the region that includes your state of residency. You can locate the appropriate consulate here.
  • Canadian citizens must contact the appropriate consulate for your region or province. That information is available here.

Important Notice for All Students

Do not plan to use your passport after Feb. 1. Some consulates will process your visa in a few weeks and others can take up to 90 days prior to your departure.
