What is an Externship?

An externship is a learning experience outside of the classroom. You will earn credit by practicing law.
You can earn up to 15 academic credits by working in “field placements” for judges and practicing attorneys engaged in public interest law. However, the ABA prohibits payment for any externship work that earns credit toward graduation.
Externship placements, also called “field placements,” are available locally, across the state, and across the world.
- You may enroll in externships during fall, spring, and summer semesters.
- Placements are for one semester only, except in pre-arranged circumstances.
- You may enroll for a maximum of two semesters.
- You must be enrolled in, or have completed, 60 credits OR be an exceptional student who:
- Has completed one year of law school
- Possesses sufficient skills, as determined by the Externship director.
- Third-year students receive placement preference. Second-year students may be approved on a limited basis; criteria include grade point average and requested placement.
The externship program is dedicated to furthering the mission of the Gonzaga University community, as shown in its commitment to equal access to the judicial system for all citizens. Students enrolled in the externship program will be allowed to work for government entities and non-profit organizations. Students are not allowed to work in private firms.
