Ambassador to address Middle East peace

Retired U.S. Ambassador Phillip Wilcox

Gonzaga’s International Law Society joins with the World Affairs Council of Spokane to present retired U.S. Ambassador Phillip Wilcox in a presentation called "Can President Obama Make Peace Between Israel and Palestine Or Is It Too Late?"

Ambassador Wilcox will speak at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 8, in Classroom 142 of the Gonzaga University School of Law. Admission is free for students and faculty, $5 for WAC members, and $10 for the public.

Ambassador Wilcox, President of the Foundation for Middle East Peace in Washington, D.C., is an expert on U.N. and U.S. diplomatic efforts to resolve competing claims of Israelis and Palestinians to the Holy Land.

President Barack Obama is pushing hard for a Middle East peace accord between Israel and Palestine, holding bilateral and trilateral talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. But is peace in this region possible? How will the recent moves by Israel to increase settlements in the West Bank effect this? Is it necessary to include Hamas in the peace process to make it work?

Ambassador Wilcox will offer unique insights into how President Obama is handling the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and answer whether President Obama can, as he has promised, bring this tragic conflict to an end.
