Hispanic Law Caucus hosts high schoolers

On Saturday, March 21, the Gonzaga Hispanic Law Caucus (GHLC) hosted 30 high school students from Wenatchee and Quincy.

The students were participating in the law school’s high-school  mock trial program.

Under the direction of the GHLC Board, the program has been rejuvenated and renamed “Alcanzar Justice.” In Spanish, alcanzar means “to achieve.”

The visiting students boarded a bus at 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning to make the trip to Spokane. Throughout the day, they participated in activities designed to encourage them to consider pursuing a legal education. The students toured the school and heard from practicing attorneys, who spoke about their specialties within the legal field.

At lunch, current GU Law students shared their personal paths to law school and afterward helped their guests prepare for the afternoon’s mock trial.

Alcanzar Justice works with minority students who would be the first in their families to attend college. Though focused on the legal field, the program's broader goal is to empower students to achieve their educational goals.

Many of the high school students indicated a desire to return, and GHLC members are looking forward to hosting an even more successful event next year.

A contribution from the Latino/a Bar Association of Washington helped defray the day's expenses.
