Hector Quiroga, Sara Maleki, and Ayanna Eagan were recently awarded the Carl Maxey Memorial Scholarship Award by the Spokane County Bar Association.

This award was established by Maxey's friends and family to celebrate his work in promoting diversity and defending the common man. The scholarship is awarded annually to 2L and 3L students who have shown outstanding academic achievement and are committed to promoting diversity.

Maxey's son Bill and Judge Greg Sypolt, along with members of the Spokane County Bar Association, presented the students with their award.

Carl Maxey was an exceptional trial lawyer and a giant in civil rights, sports law and politics. He was the first African-American man in Eastern Washington to pass the bar and become an attorney. He opened the Fredrickson, Maxey, Bell and Allison Law Firm in 1960. A distinguished civil rights advocate, he was appointed by five different United States Presidents to chair the Washington State Advisory Commission to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

Maxey also served on the Gonzaga Law School Board of Advisors, and was awarded the Gonzaga Law Medal.

The scholarship was started by Maxey's friends and family and has been awarded annually since 2001.
