Gonzaga University School of Law hosted over 150 participants at the Race and Criminal Justice in the West Conference on Friday, September 23, and Saturday, September 24, 2011.
More than 60 scholars, practicing lawyers, prosecutors, judges, and law enforcement officers presented at the conference, which examined the topic of race and the criminal justice system in the Western states. Presentations explored the role of bias - both conscious and unconscious - in the justice system.
The Honorable Barbara Madsen, Chief Justice of the Washington State Supreme Court, delivered the keynote address.
Professor and John J. Hemmingson Chair Jason Gillmer organized the conference in cooperation with the Task Force on Race and Justice.
