Checking Out Library Materials

Checking Out and Renewing Material

A valid Gonzaga University identification card serves as your library card and must be shown to check out materials. Most items may be renewed online. Click on the "My Account" link in Chester and follow instructions to renew. You may also renew items in person by calling the Circulation Desk. Items with holds or recalls cannot be renewed. Should you have any questions regarding circulation procedures or policies, contact Cecelia McMullen (313-5792).

Circulating Materials and Due Dates

Adjunct faculty members may check out all library materials, including items that do not circulate to other patrons. The circulation period depends upon the type of item borrowed.

Material needed for academic purposes that is normally non-circulating may be checked out for one to three days. These items include the following:

  • Primary materials (e.g., reporters, statutes, and codes)

  • Reference materials

  • Reserve materials

  • Periodicals and law reviews

  • Multi-volume treatises

  • Looseleaf materials

  • Microforms

Other types of materials may be checked out as follows:

  • Books (single-volume and two-volume sets only), shelved on the third floor and on the New Book Shelf, circulate for one semester

  • DVDs and videotapes, circulate for three days.

  • Wireless mice, pointers, microphones, VGA cords, and items needed for classroom presentations are available at the Circulation Desk and circulate for two hours.

  • Headphones and a digital voice recorder circulate for one day.

Fees for Late Returns and Lost or Damaged Materials

Adjunct faculty members are not charged late fees, but are responsible for the replacement cost for lost or damaged items.

Recalls and Holds

All items are subject to recall when requested by another patron. If you have an immediate need for an item that is checked out, you may initiate a recall by contacting the Circulation Desk. Alternatively, you may put a "hold" on an item ensuring you are next in line to borrow the item when it is returned. You will be notified by e-mail when it is available.

Missing Books

If an item cannot be found on the shelf, please contact the Circulation staff, who will search for the item and will notify you by e-mail regarding the outcome. If you need the material immediately, ask the Reference staff for assistance in locating the information through other means.
