New Books

New Book Shelf: New books are shelved on the New Book Shelf (located across from the Kelley Room) for one to two months before being shelved in the permanent collection. They are available for circulation.

New Book List: A list of new titles can be found on Chester, under the "New Materials" search tab. This list is updated weekly and contains new additions for the prior month.

Reserve Materials

This collection, located behind the Circulation Desk, consists of class materials provided by professors and tutors, frequently-used library materials, such as study aids, and duplicate copies of popular Washington state materials. Other reserve items include high-use materials, which are temporarily placed on reserve while in high demand, items on the hold shelf available for pick-up, and interlibrary loan items ready for use.

Print Materials

Print materials are found on all three floors of the library. The following is a list of often used materials along with their locations in the Library:

  • Reference Materials - Greenan Reading Room, 1st Floor
  • Regional Reporters and State Codes - 2nd Floor

  • Scholarly Books and Treatises - 3rd Floor

Please notify the Circulation Desk (323-5792) if you find library material that is damaged, has missing pages, or otherwise needs repair.

Electronic Resources

In addition to its print collection, the library also has an extensive collection of materials available in electronic format under the legal databases link on the library home page. When accessing these materials from off campus you may be prompted to enter your law school user name and password. Additional electronic resources are available under the "Subscription Databases - Multidisciplinary" link. Here you will find numerous resources provided through the Foley Center Library. For assistance with electronic materials, contact Merri Hartse, Electronic Resources Librarian (323-3749).

Westlaw, LexisNexis, and Loislaw

Westlaw, LexisNexis, and Loislaw are online databases containing a wide array of primary and secondary legal materials as well as various news and non-legal sources. To access these databases it is necessary to have a password issued by the publisher. Westlaw and LexisNexis passwords are distributed to IL students at the beginning of fall semester. Students use the same passwords for the duration of their law school careers. Loislaw access is available immediately. To obtain information about password access to Loislaw, please inquire at the Reference Desk or contact Merri Hartse (323-3749).

Microforms

Location and Type of Materials:. The library's collection of microfiche and microfilm is in the microform cabinets on the second floor. This collection includes:

  • Federal legislative history materials
  • State bar journals
  • Past state bar exams
  • ABA archival collection
  • Washington and U.S. Supreme Court briefs
  • Native American Law
  • Canon Law.

Microform Readers/Printers: Microform reader/printers are located adjacent to the microform collection. If you need instruction on using the reader/printer, please ask at the Circulation Desk. Charges for microform printing, payable at the Circulation Desk, are 10 cents per page for printing done for an academic purpose and 30 cents per page for all other printing. Foley Library has equipment to make PDF copies of microform materials. Please contact the Circulation Desk for assistance.

U.S. Government Documents

The library is a federal depository library. Particular emphasis is placed on congressional publications, agency administrative decisions, and publications from the Labor Department, Treasury Department, Judiciary, Justice Department, Federal Trade Commission, Government Printing Office, Library of Congress, Office of the Federal Register, Executive Office of the President, and the Environmental Protection Agency. Paper documents selected by the library are integrated into the library's collection. Many documents are also available online. GPO Access, the Government Printing Office (GPO) website provides access to numerous government documents. 

Recreational Reading, Videotapes and DVDs

The northwest alcove on the first floor of the library contains the videotape and DVD collection as well as a collection of popular magazines and newspapers. The videotape and DVD collection includes educational items and popular videotapes and DVDs, all with a legal theme. Videotapes and DVDs circulate for three days. Magazines and newspapers do not circulate and should remain in the northwest alcove.

Book Exchange

The library maintains the Book Exchange, a small collection of donated which can be removed from the library without checking them out or returning them. The Book Exchange is located outside the Library Administrative Suite, to the rear of the first floor of the Library. If you would like to donate books, simply leave them on the bookcase.
