Bullet::Borrowing Materials from Other Libraries

Interlibrary Loan Service

spacer

For material not owned by Chastek Library, you may request an Interlibrary Loan (ILL). The ILL Office is located adjacent to the Circulation Desk. Contact Carolyn Hood (323-3755) to initiate a request. Please note that we do not obtain ILL materials for law firms, so please submit only requests that are related to your teaching.

Determining if Items are Available on Campus

Before submitting your request, first look in Chester, the library's online catalog and the library's various electronic resources, including Westlaw, LexisNexis, and HeinOnline, to see if the item is available locally. We do not request items if they are available electronically or at one of the Gonzaga University libraries unless the item is lost or otherwise not available. Materials from Washington Idaho Network (WIN) libraries can be requested directly by clicking the WIN Borrow tab in Chester.

Identifying Bibliographic Information

If the items are not available locally, use WorldCat to obtain bibliographic information—the exact title, author, journal title (if applicable), publisher and publishing date, ISBN, pages you are requesting, and so forth. Also note which libraries own the item. By identifying the material you need as specifically as possible, you will expedite the ILL borrowing process.

Requesting Interlibrary Loans

Once you have located the bibliographic information for the needed item, there are several methods for you to request the item:

  • Call or e-mail Carolyn Hood (323-3755) with the full bibliographic information, or
  • Complete an ILL form at ILL Office, or
  • Make a direct request for an item from within the WorldCat database. Just click on the ILL icon and fill out the ILL form.

Whichever method you choose, please indicate if there is a date after which you will no longer need the item. The average time for obtaining materials though ILL is one to two weeks. Esoteric or rare items can be difficult to locate and may not be available through ILL or may require a lengthy waiting period. Every effort is made to process it within one working day.

Using Interlibrary Loan Materials

You will be notified by e-mail or voicemail when requested material arrives and it will be held at the Circulation Desk. All items must be returned to the Circulation Desk by the due date with the exception of photocopies. Photocopies need not be returned unless specifically marked with a due date. Items borrowed through ILL are subject to recall by the lending library. To renew ILL items, contact Carolyn Hood (323-3755) before the due date.
