Access for Persons with Disabilities

The law library is accessible to individuals with disabilities and will make all reasonable efforts to meet the needs of those with disabilities who wish to use the library. The library is equipped with an Optelec 20/20 Plus machine (which enlarges text) to accommodate the visually impaired. The machine is located on the second floor of the library to the right of the Computer Lab. Those using the library who have mobility impairments may request assistance with photocopying or with retrieving items from the collection. Please contact the Circulation Desk (313-5792) for assistance.

For more information on disability resources, the process for law students to secure disability services, the types of services available to students and equipment availability at the Foley Center Library, contact the university's Disability Resources, Education, and Access Management Department (313-4093) or view the department's web pages.

Bicycles, Rollerblades & Skateboards

Bicycles, rollerblades, skateboards, and the like are not allowed in the library.

Cell Phones

Cell phones may not be used anywhere in the library, including the Computer Labs, study rooms, stairwells, and restrooms. Public telephones are available near the first floor Student Lounge. Dial "9" to get an outside line.

Copyright

The law library, like the university at large, seeks to balance the right of fair use with the legal ownership rights of copyright holders in accordance with Gonzaga's philosophy and mission as a humanistic, Catholic, and Jesuit University. To this end, Gonzaga has issued a policy on copyright with the objective of good faith compliance with the directives and intent of the copyright law of the United States. To review Gonzaga's copyright policy in full, click here.

For a general interpretation and information regarding copyright and reserve materials in a library setting, there is guidance available on campus from the Foley Center Library, click here.

Copies requested or made for the purpose of interlibrary loan are also subject to the restrictions of copyright laws. The law library reserves the right not to fill a copying order that, in the judgment of the ILL staff, would be in violation of copyright law. The Foley Center Library has a similar restriction on copy requests made through interlibrary loan. For more information click here.

Food, Drink, and Tobacco

Beverages in spill-proof containers are permitted in all areas of the library. Food and tobacco products are not permitted in the library.

Noise

All three floors of the library, including the Computer Labs, are quiet study areas. We ask all patrons and staff to work cooperatively to minimize noise in the library. The common areas outside of the library are available for telephone calls and conversation.

The third floor of the library is intended to be the quietest of the three floors. Please make a special effort to maintain quiet on the third floor by not talking in open areas. The study rooms are not sound proof, so please close the doors when working with a group.

Personal Belongings

Please do not leave any personal items unattended in the library. Any items left unattended at closing will be placed in Lost and Found at the Circulation Desk.

Pets/Animals

With the exception of guide or service dogs, no pets or animals are allowed in the library.

Security

Maintaining security in the library is of paramount concern to the library administration and staff. If you observe any hazardous or potentially dangerous situation in or around the library, please report your observations to the Circulation Desk (313-5792), Campus Security (Dispatch 313-2222), or to the local police (911) as the situation requires.

Campus Security maintains a website that may address many of your concerns regarding campus security and safety. Included is information about how to make a security report and a list of frequently asked questions. Campus Security officers answer calls for service, provide escorts upon request, check alarms, and investigate suspicious situations. For more detailed information, click here.

Signs

Signs may be posted on the bulletin board in the library stairwells.

Study Rooms

The library has 16 study rooms of various sizes on the second and third floors for student use. These rooms may be reserved for use for up to four hours per study group or individual per day. The sign-up book to reserve the study rooms is located in front of the Kelley Reading Room. Reservations may be made for the current week (Monday through Sunday) only. Room schedules are posted daily on study room doors so that study groups and individuals may easily check room availability. Reservations are forfeited if the study group or individual who reserved the room is more than fifteen (15) minutes late and someone else has claimed the room. Reservations are forfeited if the same study group or individual reserves a study room under different names. All library policies apply to the study rooms, including the ban on eating and cellular telephone use.

Persons who wish to view DVDs and videotapes have priority to use those rooms equipped with DVD/video players and monitors. In other rooms, generally study groups have priority over individuals.

A limited number of study rooms are reserved for exclusive use by law school competition teams during those times they are preparing their competition briefs.

During exam periods, some study rooms may be reserved by the law school Registrar for ADA compliant exams. A section of study carrels on the third floor is set aside during exam periods for those in need of a place to take "take-home" exams.

Unattended Children

The law school policy against leaving children unattended in the law school building applies in the library. The first time a child is left unattended, the library staff will look for the parent in the library. If staff cannot locate the child's parent or if a child is left unattended a second time, the library staff may call Campus Security.
