Bullet::Checking Out Materials from the Library

Non-Circulating Materials

Most books owned by the library are high-use items needed by patrons for in-house legal research and, therefore, do not circulate. Non circulating items include the following:

  • Primary materials (e.g., reporters, statutes and codes)

  • Reference materials

  • Reserve materials

  • Periodicals and law reviews

  • Multi-volume treatises

  • Looseleaf materials

  • Microforms

Circulating Materials

Circulating items include the following:

  • Books (single-volume and two-volume sets only) shelved on the third floor and on the New Book Shelf, circulate for one (1) semester.

  • Reserve materials, shelved behind the Circulation Desk, circulate for use within the Library for two (2) hours.

  • DVDs and videotapes circulate for three (3) days.

  • Audiocassettes, shelved in the Kelley Room, circulate for three (3) days.

  • Audiocassette players, VGA cords, and items needed for classroom presentations are available at the Circulation Desk and circulate for two (2) hours.

  • A digital voice recorder is available at the Circulation Desk. Please contact the Circulation supervisor for checkout period.

  • Laptop computers and network cards, available at the Circulation Desk, circulate for three (3) days.

  • Headphones and network cords (e.g. CAT5), available at the Circulation Desk, circulate until the end of the day.

  • USB flash drives, available at the Circulation Desk, circulate for two hours.

Checking Out Books, DVDs, Videotapes, and Audiocassettes

To check out these items bring them to the Circulation Desk. Your valid student identification card, which is also your library card, must be shown to check out any materials.

Renewing Books, DVDs, Videotapes, and Audiocassettes

Borrowed items may be renewed once. You may renew these items yourself by following the " My Library Account" link in Chester and clicking on the check box to renew. You may also renew items in person at the Circulation Desk or by phone by calling the Circulation Desk (313-5792).

Checking Out Laptops and Network Cards

Laptops and network cards may be checked out and returned to the Circulation Desk between the hours of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. only. You must sign a contract at the time of the initial laptop checkout in each academic year. For each successive checkout, you must present your valid student identification card.

Prior to checking out a network card for use on your laptop, Computing Services must verify that your virus protection and software patches on your laptop are up to date. Please contact Dalean Neiner (313-3795, Room 159) before proceeding to the Circulation Desk.

If most of the laptops are checked out, you must wait at least two hours between turning in a laptop and checking out another one. Network card renewals can only be done in person at the Circulation Desk.

When returning a laptop please save materials you have created onto a USB before you return the laptop as you may not be able to check out the same laptop again.

Please do not leave laptops unattended in the library. Library staff may pick up any laptop left unattended and take it to the Circulation Desk where it can be reclaimed. If not reclaimed within a short period of time, it may be checked out to the next waiting person.

Fees for Late Returns and Lost or Damaged Items

Late fees for overdue library materials are assessed as follows:

  • Books: $0.25/day, maximum fine $25

  • Videotapes and DVDs: $1/day, maximum fine $25

  • Network cards: $5/day (after 9 p.m.), maximum fine $95

  • Laptops: $15/day (after 9 p.m.), maximum fine $1,200

  • Overdue items recalled or on hold by others: $1/day, maximum fine $50

  • The fee assessed for a lost or damaged item includes the price of the item and a $25 processing fee

Non-payment of outstanding fines may result in placement of a Banner hold on your student record. A Banner hold blocks your ability to request a transcript, receive your grades, get a diploma, or register for classes. The hold will be lifted by Circulation supervisory staff after payment is received.

Recalls and Holds

If the item you need is checked out, you may request that it recalled by using Chester or visiting the Circulation Desk. Once a book is recalled, it must be returned to the library within three to 17 days. Alternatively, you or the Circulation staff may put a "hold" on an item so that you will be next in line to check the item out when it is returned. In either case, you will be notified by e-mail when it is available.

Missing Books

If an item cannot be found on the shelf or in the pre-shelving area and the item is not checked out, please notify the Circulation staff. A library staff member will search for the item and will notify you by e-mail regarding the status of the item. If you need the material immediately, please ask the Reference staff to help locate the information through another means.
