Biographical Information
Before joining the faculty of the Gonzaga University School of Law in 2003, Prof. Engelken practiced law as an associate and partner at Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago, Illinois from 1984-2003. Her practice focused on Intellectual Property litigation at the trial, appellate and administrative levels, including preliminary injunction hearings, TRO hearings, ex part seizures, mediation and ADR, TTAB oppositions and cancellations, ITC exclusion actions, and ICANN and WIPO proceedings. The cases she handled concerned such subjects as trademark and trade dress, false advertising, copyright, patents and design patents, Internet marketing, cybersquatting, non-competition covenants, confidentiality and trade secret disputes, and business torts.
In addition to her litigation practice, Prof. Engelken assisted clients with counseling, clearance, prosecution and enforcement programs for trademarks, service marks, design patents, trade names, domain names and corporate names.
During the course of her practice, Prof. Engelken did pro bono work in a number of areas. She represented Illinois death-row inmate Willie Enoch from 1989 until his death of natural causes in prison in April 2000. She also represented low-income artists and authors through Lawyers for the Creative Arts, and victims of domestic violence needing assistance with separation, divorce, child custody and orders of protection through Pro Bono Advocates.
