Scholarship Opportunities for Entering Students

spacer

  • Merit-based scholarships for entering students

The School of Law annually awards over $1 million in renewable scholarships to entering students. Scholarships are based upon scholastic merit, including undergraduate grades and performance on the LSAT.

All entering applicants are considered for scholarships by the Admissions Committee.

  • The Thomas More Scholarship

Each year, five incoming students are invited to participate in the Thomas More Scholarship program. Named for the noted 16th-century English lawyer, scholar, and statesman. the program provides a 100%-tuition scholarship. Students are selected for their motivation, academic achievement and commitment to public service through the practice of law.

Applications are separate from, and in addition to, the application for admission or any financial aid application. More information can be found under Academic Programs by clicking here.

  • The James E. Rogers program

Jim Rogers is a philanthropist, media magnate and chancellor of Nevada's higher education system. He believes lawyers have a role to play in the betterment of society.

"I really believe in the law," he says. "I believe in the rule of law. I believe in lawyers. They're the problem solvers of the world."

Gonzaga's commitment to the public good attracts the kinds of students whom Rogers wishes to support: "I believe very strongly in public service and Gonzaga's students are very caring."

The scholarship program Rogers seeded produces six $20,000 scholarships every year. Acceptance to this premier scholarship program is based on grades and LSAT performance.

Outside Scholarships

Some of our students receive private scholarships from a variety of sources. Many of these recipients do not know that they have to report these scholarships to the Financial Aid Office.

  • We realize that substantial efforts were taken in order to receive these awards, and the recipients should not be penalized for doing so.
  • It is our policy not to reduce other scholarships, but to reduce the loan programs.
  • We are required by federal regulation to include all outside scholarships as part of a student's financial aid award. We are also required to count these awards toward meeting financial need, and there are some instances when the receipt of outside scholarships will have an impact on a student's financial aid award.
  • Once we are notified of these scholarships we will adjust your award and send you a revised financial aid award notice.
