Federal Tax Clinic Attends United States Tax Court

The United States Tax Court held a session in Spokane, Wash., during the week of October 20, 2008.
The Director of the Federal Tax Clinic and six student interns attended the October 20, 2008 Calendar Call. The Hon. Judge Diane L. Kroupa introduced the Director and asked the students to stand and be recognized. She announced that the clinic was offering our services to unrepresented taxpayers.
The Tax Clinic had two cases for settlement on the calendar, and the students helped three unrepresented taxpayers. Of the three, two became clients of the clinic. We obtained a favorable settlement for one and a continuance for the other.
The third taxpayer was advised to settle, and the taxpayer took our advice.
When one of the cases for settlement was called, the Director and the two students who handled the case approached the Judge and entered our appearances. The Judge asked the lead student about the resolution of the case and the student’s impressions.
Three of the student interns were so interested in the Tax Court proceedings that they stayed and watched a trial that afternoon.
The Tax Court visits Spokane approximately once each year, and the Gonzaga Federal Tax Clinic is “recognized” by the Court because we have met the requirements for an Academic Clinical Program to represent taxpayers before the Court.
