Limited License to Practice Law
Some externship placements, such as in the prosecutors’ and public defenders’ offices, which provide students with in-court experiences, require a limited license to practice law given by the State Bar Association. Requirements and eligibility vary by state. Please follow the links below for the states listed.

Washington State - Rule 9 Limited License to Practice Law
- Only students who have completed 60 credits are eligible to apply for their Rule 9 membership.
- Visit Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) for more information regarding Rule 9 admission.
California - Practical Training of Law Students (PTLS)
- To be eligible to become a certified student, candidates must have:
- Completed one full year of studies (270 hours) at an accredited law school;
- Completed or be currently enrolled in and attending academic courses in evidence and civil procedure.
- Visit The State Bar of California for more information on becoming a certified student in California.
