Public Policy Issues for American Indian Governments

This seminar course provides an opportunity to explore “frontier” issues in government for indigenous people by researching and studying economic and other policy issues as those policies relate to the development and enactment of civil laws targeted toward building sustainable economic systems in Indian Country. This course will examine – on a comparative law basis – the current and future role of public policy and the rule of law within American Indian governments with respect to commercial and other activities in Indian Country. Select readings will include disciplines such as law, economics, philosophy, and history. Each student will prepare a legal research paper (25-30 pages in length) for presentation to the seminar. Students will be required to review and critique papers prepared by other students enrolled in the seminar.  Grades based on seminar participation and paper.
