Who May Apply for University Legal Assistance (ULA) Services

  • University Legal Assistance (ULA) gives preference to low income individuals who apply.
  • All direct ULA services are by application only. Persons 60 years of age and older can request an application for direct services to by calling ULA at(509) 323-5791.
  • ULA accepts cases by referral from Volunteer Lawyers Program at (509) 324-0144 or Coordinated Legal Education, Advice and Referral (CLEAR) at (888) 201-1014.
  • ULA is located in the Center for Law and Justice at Gonzaga University School of Law, often referred to as The Clinic.

ULA Eligible Clients and Cases Include:

Elder Law Project

  • ULA provides representation, advice and counseling without charge to low-income persons 60 years of age and older.
  • Cases are handled by second and third-year law students under the direct supervision of attorneys. 
  • Representation includes civil legal matters such as:
    • Government benefits
    • Health
    • Housing
    • Family Law
    • Consumer Protection
    • Employment
    • Estate Planning

Low-Income Tax Payer Project

  • ULA also provides assistance to low-income tax payers with Federal tax problems with state tax related issues, such as IRS liens, notices of tax deficiencies, bills for unpaid taxes or notices of unfilled returns.
  • Cases are handled by trained interns and supervised by an experienced tax professional. 
  • These cases are by application only and applications can be requested by calling (509) 323-5791.

Family Law and Other Cases

  • Other cases handled by ULA are referrals from:
    • Volunteer Lawyers Program at (509) 324-0144
    • Coordinated Legal Education, Advice and Referral (CLEAR) at (888) 201-1014
