Indian Law Lecture Series

Marc Slonim, Inaugural Lecturer

On Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, Seattle attorney Marc Slonim delivered the inaugural speech in the Indian Law Lecture series.

Slonim is a partner in the law firm of Ziontz, Chestnut, Varnell, Berley and Slonim. The firm was one of the first in the country to specialize in representing Indian tribes, and has been an advocate for tribal sovereignty and treaty rights for over 40 years.

Slonim received his Juris Doctor Degree with Highest Honors from the University of Washington Law School in 1980. For nearly 30 years, his practice has focused on tribal sovereignty, natural resources and treaty rights.

Slonim was the lead attorney in the Mille Lacs Band’s treaty hunting, fishing, and gathering litigation, and argued the case in the United States Supreme Court. The Court’s decision upholding the Band’s treaty rights is one of a limited number of victories for Indian tribes in the Supreme Court in the past 20 years.

The lecture was presented by the Federal Indian Law Program, the Indian Law Caucus, and the Gonzaga Public Interest Law Project.
